There are lessons from the Pike River tragedy which must be taken on board by New Zealand’s directors and senior leaders if we are to prevent similar events occurring in future.

Leadership from the Top

To capture these lessons, the Forum asked prominent figures involved in the Pike River Royal Commission, and in implementing the Commission’s recommendations, to share their insights with our members at two seminars in May 2013. The over-riding message from these events was that leaders set the tone for health and safety in an organisation and that they need to ‘ask the right questions’ so they can recognise and respond appropriately to emerging risks.
